co-founder of Netflix and all-round interesting chap. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"This Netflix Co-Founder Turned His Idea Into A Company Worth Over $100 Billion | Marc Randolph\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GdJPPaKygFQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are two takeaways. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Commitment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An interesting piece of advice, originally from his son. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When he was learning to skateboard a few years ago, in his fifties, he wanted to drop into a half pipe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where you lean over the edge of a vertical drop before throwing yourself forward, face first, hoping your skateboard follows. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His son, a keen skateboarder advised him to place all his weight on the front foot. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;What would happen if I leant too far forwards?&#8221; he asked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You never lean too far forwards&#8221;, replied his son. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It struck Marc as a great metaphor for life\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whenever we want to do something, we know we have to commit to see success. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s the nature of the beast. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some worry that they&#8217;re assuming excessive risk and instinctively pull back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaning into the halfpipe is a good reminder that <a href=\"https:\/\/bloomsoup.com\/understanding-fear\/\">fear<\/a> creates the misguided assumption that we&#8217;re leaning too far forward. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reality? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re probably not leaning far enough and fully committing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ideas<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No-one knows which ideas will work and vice versa, because all ideas precede <a href=\"https:\/\/bloomsoup.com\/taking-action\/\">action<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Very few ideas survive contact with reality. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore a good heuristic to employ is that every idea you have is bad until validated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So strive to test your assumptions as quickly as possible and iterate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f6f9fb;color:#4d535e\">&#8220;Take your idea, and quickly collide it with reality&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Love this. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marc shares a story from his early Netflix days, where having had the idea for mail-order DVD rentals, he and his co-founder Reed Hastings immediately tested its feasibility by posting home a CD (the closest thing they could find to a
