{"id":4364,"date":"2020-10-09T17:43:17","date_gmt":"2020-10-09T17:43:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/bloomsoup.com\/?p=4364"},"modified":"2020-10-09T17:45:17","modified_gmt":"2020-10-09T17:45:17","slug":"my-octopus-teacher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bloomsoup.com\/my-octopus-teacher\/","title":{"rendered":"My Octopus Teacher"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"My Octopus Teacher | Official Trailer | Netflix\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/3s0LTDhqe5A?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I watched the &#8216;My Octopus Teacher&#8217; documentary on Netflix recently and it was great. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here&#8217;s a quick summary&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A South African filmmaker experiences burnout and takes time out to reset. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every day he starts ocean snorkelling and freediving, a beloved childhood activity which becomes a kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/bloomsoup.com\/wim-hof-breathing\/\">cold treatment<\/a> and mind therapy in one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Facing the elements, he braves the frigid waters without a wetsuit, exploring the alien world just a few feet below the surface. <br><br>From shoals of fish to pyjama sharks and crabs to jellyfish, he communes with nature on an intimate level. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After finding a kelp forest and spotting unusual movement on the sea bed, his adventures with an octopus begin, which would last for over 365 days. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cephalopods possess an unusually high level of intelligence and watching her in action, the filmmaker experiences just how ingenious these creatures are to survive and thrive in our oceans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By spending so much time in the wild with his new accomplice, he&#8217;s able to make a host of unusual observations, many of which aren&#8217;t even documented in the scientific literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily for us, in the course of their extended encounter, the filmmaker develops a renewed sense of passion and <a href=\"https:\/\/bloomsoup.com\/life-purpose\/\">purpose<\/a>, encouraging him to film his experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As such, the documentary focuses on the duo&#8217;s relationship as they break down the interspecies barrier and become friends. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unsurprisingly there are a few highs and lows, as he becomes increasingly fond of his study subject. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The story also touches on the filmmaker&#8217;s relationship with his son, who often accompanies his father on the expeditions and learns to love the water just as much. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this way, it&#8217;s not simply a tale of one man and an octopus, but rather a message with a deeper meaning, showcasing the joy derived from a <a href=\"https:\/\/bloomsoup.com\/simple-living\/\">simple life<\/a> and a testament to the power of less. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a world that&#8217;s forever implying that we need more to be happy, it&#8217;s a refreshing reminder that simple pleasures exist all around us, if only we&#8217;re present enough to truly experience them.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also wonderfully highlights the healing properties of nature and our responsibility, in an age of climate change, to protect the creatures that rely on our finely balanced ecosystem for survival. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Highly recommended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>P.S. If you&#8217;re into sci-fi, try pairing this with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Children-Ruin-Adrian-Tchaikovsky\/dp\/1509865837\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Children of Ruin<\/a> by Adrian Tchaikovsky (after reading Children of Time first), which is an awesome story about Octopi, but in space.
