As I swigged the acid, gut burning liquor, stars danced before my eyes.<\/p>\n

Soon I felt drunk.<\/p>\n

I prepared myself to be stripped, robbed and tied to a tree in the Ecuadorian jungle…<\/p>\n

But instead, the wizened Shaman smiled, crooked teeth and piercing eyes.<\/p>\n

He pointed at a wooden bowl containing a brown concoction, the reason for my pilgrimage.<\/p>\n

It was time for my ayahuasca ceremony and the trip of a lifetime.<\/p>\n

I’d\u00a0been zigzagging aimlessly across Ecuador on the way to Colombia.<\/p>\n

But then a chance encounter with a local in Ba\u00f1os changed my plans completely.<\/p>\n

He asked if I’d ever tried ayahuasca, and recommended a shaman who’d be willing to perform a private ceremony.<\/p>\n

My only knowledge of an ayahuasca ceremony\u00a0was from an old BBC documentary…<\/p>\n
